Signs Your Garage Door Spring Is Broken

  • A loud bang, like a gunshot, from the garage. That's the spring letting go.
  • A visible gap in the spring above the door
  • The door feels extremely heavy or won't lift by hand
  • The opener hums, lifts the door a few inches, then stops or reverses
  • The door closes fast or slams shut
  • Cables hanging loose or off the drum
Please don't muscle the door open or keep hitting the button. Your opener is built to guide the door, not to lift 150-plus pounds on its own. Making it try is how a spring repair turns into a spring repair and a new opener. If your car is stuck inside, tell us when you call and we'll do our best to get to you first.

How Long Do Garage Door Springs Last?

An average garage door spring lasts 4 to 8 years, depending on how often the door is used. Springs are rated in cycles (one open and one close), and most builder-grade springs are rated for about 10,000 cycles.

For most families, the garage is the real front door. You leave for work through it, kids come and go through it, and it opens for every errand and grocery run. The average household opens and closes its garage door about 4 to 5 times a day, roughly 1,500 cycles a year. At that pace, a standard 10,000-cycle spring is worn out in about 5 to 7 years. A busy household with teen drivers can wear one out in 4.

Phoenix heat, big temperature swings and dust add to the wear, so springs here often give out on the early side of that range. That's why we install 50,000-cycle springs, which should outlast a standard spring several times over.

What's Included in a Spring Replacement

  • High-cycle springs that last about five times longer than a standard spring
  • A 5-year parts & labor warranty
  • Springs sized to your door's actual weight, not a "close enough" spring off the truck
  • Cables tensioned and the door balanced so it's easy on your opener
  • A safety check of the cables, drums, bearings, rollers and the opener's auto-reverse

We usually recommend new cables at the same time, especially if they're blackened or frayed. Your new springs are going to be around for a long time, and you don't want a tired old cable to be the next thing that snaps.

Torsion, Extension & TorqueMaster Springs

Torsion springs

Mounted on a bar above the door. This is the most common setup in the Valley.

Extension springs

Run along the horizontal tracks on each side, mostly on older or lighter doors. We work on both.

TorqueMaster

Have a Wayne Dalton door with the springs hidden inside a tube? That's a TorqueMaster system. We don't patch these. It's a lower-quality design that doesn't last, so we convert it to standard torsion springs.

Should I replace one spring or both?

If your door has two springs and one broke, the other one usually isn't far behind. They went in on the same day and have done the exact same number of cycles. Replacing both saves you a second visit and keeps the door balanced. We'll show you what we find, and you decide.

Straight Answers, No Upsell

We're not going to sell you a new door when what you need is a spring. We'll show you what we found, tell you what we'd do if it were our own garage, and let you make the call. We advise, you decide.

We put in high-cycle springs because we'd rather fix your door once than see you again in three years. Nothing personal. We'd just rather see you for a tune-up.

I started Gryffin to run a garage door company the way I'd want one to treat my own family: show up when we say we will, explain things in plain English, and do the job right the first time. – Brad Hall, Owner

"We woke up to a large bang one morning last week… Turns out the spring had snapped. The first person I called was Brad and he was out within a few hours. He had everything fixed in no time."Steve S.

Griffin sent a tech out to give me an estimate on installing a new garage door opener. He eyeballed my “broken” opener, pushed a few buttons on it and Shazam, it came back to life. He didn’t have to do that. What an honest company! H would highly recommend this company for your garage door needs.

My garage door was screaming every time I opened it and my kids pointed out that some of the rollers were almost off the track (see the picture). I reached out to Brad. He was at my house within the hour and had all the wheels replaced in about a half hour. When he was done, I was shocked at how quiet my garage door could be! He was fast, professional, extremely knowledgeable, and very reasonably priced. If I have issues in the future, this is who I am going to call. I highly recommend Brad and his team!

I've been looking for a reliable 'garage door guy' for a while. So happy I found Brad with Gryffin! Communicated well through the whole process, was ON TIME and did the work right, the first time. I needed a new bottom vinyl/rubber piece because mine was rotted out from the sun. Because of the style we had, we needed to have the bottom retaining track replaced. He did that and I had him replace my rollers with new ones as well. We had an older metal with bearings system and the new one is more of a poly material style roller. Much quieter and smoother and they have a lifetime warranty. Will definitely be using Gryffin again because we all know garage doors need maintenance.

Garage Door Spring FAQs

Can I replace a garage door spring myself?

We'd really rather you didn't. A wound torsion spring stores enough energy to break a wrist or worse, and doing it safely takes winding bars, the right size spring and a lot of practice. This is one YouTube project worth skipping.

How long does spring replacement take?

Most spring replacements take about an hour, including balancing the door and a safety check.

Can you come today?

Often, yes. It depends on the schedule. Call (480) 744-8485 and we'll give you the earliest time we have.

Do you work on Saturdays?

We take Saturday appointments for emergencies, like a door stuck open or a car stuck inside. Our hours are Monday–Friday, 7am–5pm, and Saturday, 7am–5pm, for emergencies only.

Can I still use my door with one broken spring?

No. Even with two springs, one isn't enough to hold the door safely. Leave the door where it is and give us a call.

Do you offer free estimates?

Yes. Estimates are free on all of our services.
